Raising Kids with Healthy and Strong Brain

In the past decade, neuroscientists have been able to expand our knowledge of brain activities and functionalities thanks to modern brain imaging techniques. The brain has approximately 80 billion neurons connected together through some 100 trillion bundles or connections across different regions of the brain. This complex structure is built through a series of processes that begin before birth and continue into adulthood. The cognitive skills such as attention, memory and executive functions are related to brain neural connections.

The new work of Brian Edwards and Greg Dunn allow us to see with our own eyes what the activity of 500,000 brain connections look like.

Although genes affect development of brain connections, these connections are also reinforced by repeated use. Therefore, the environment where children are raised in is key in brain developmental process. A reliable and appropriate environment with serve and return interaction between children and their parents or caregivers would go a long way to improve brain development.

There are many ways for parents to create a healthy and engaging environment for children. For example, providing a loving atmosphere at home, physical exercise, a good night’s sleep and healthy food contribute to quality brain development. Parents, teachers and education coordinators can also help improve children cognitive skills through their education system.

With the advent of technology, new tools are at our disposal to create a more compelling learning experience for children at schools and at home. Unfortunately, education methods have not yet caught up with technology. This has created many opportunities to revolutionize how we learn and how we teach.

Moreover, studies show that education in and through art affects development of cognition such as creative thinking and problem solving. Many researches have focused on the integration of art into teaching and learning of science and its positive effect in improving children’s thinking, reasoning abilities and organizational skills. Using visual arts in learning and teaching science fosters children’s curiosity, captures their attention and motivates them to learn scientific concepts.

We believe that combining art with new possibilities in education technology creates unique opportunities to change the way children learn. It can expedite development of the brain and improve cognition at the early age. Shivid is founded based on a passion to bring this idea into fruition.
